People have used coconut oil for generations as a health food and natural healer, with documented success. It can improve digestion, clear up skin problems, boost energy levels, aid in weight loss, fight infections, balance blood sugar and bring improvement to numerous other conditions. Horse (and other pet) owners are now discovering it delivers the same benefits for their animals.
Coconut oil is unlike any other vegetable oil fed to horses, and may provide the following unique benefits:
- Increased muscle glycogen storage – saturated fats such as those found in coconut oil are more effective at enhancing muscle glycogen storage than unsaturated fats (eg rice bran, corn, flax, soy bean).
- Anti-viral and anti-bacterial protection – for gut health and well-being; assists with ulcers, acidosis, colic, poor condition and lameness. Also improves the appearance of the coat.
- Ready energy – coconut oil contains MCTs (medium chain tryglycerides) which are easier to digest, absorb and convert to muscle energy, unlike long-chain fatty acids found in other vegetable oils. MCTs are absorbed directly into the portal blood and transported to the liver, whereas polyunsaturated oils are transported to the liver via the lymphatic system.
- Non-heating feed – oil provides a source of cool energy resulting in non-fizzy behaviour.
